Filming
in COLOMBIA
It's no big secret that nowadays production
companies can film practically anywhere in the
world with the same quality that we have become
accustomed to with Hollywood. Thanks to digital
technology and globalization, excellent film
crews and the latest in equipment can be
found in practically every country in the world.
Now you don't need millions of bucks in the bank
to be able to compete with the "majors". All it
takes today is a little know-how, good field
experience and a lot of talent.
One
of the oldest sayings in Hollywood was the one
that stated firmly that "a tree is a tree, a
rock is a rock, let's shoot it in Griffith Park!"
This reasoning served the industry for many years,
becoming the guiding force in creating the big
film studios and the large backlots where the
whole world was reproduced within the confines
of the ominous, but aptly called "majors", which
have ruled over the fantasy world of celluloid
dreams that we all know as Hollywood or "tinsel
town". This belief was the main driving
force that helped Hollywood gain its foothold on
the theatrical screens all over the world
because it was all controlled from one single
place and everything was reproduced within its
confines.
But
times have changed, the old foot-pedal moviolas
have all been retired to film museums or sold as
scrap metal and the studio back-lots have become
gigantic condos. Thanks to the advent of the
independents, now filmmakers look toward new
horizons, discovering new countries, new
cultures, taking advantage of the technological
advances of the medium and generalized technical
infraestructure that makes it much easier to
shoot in practically any place in the world. The
axiom of "a tree is a tree and a rock is a rock" still holds true, but the last place you'd want
to shoot them today is in Griffith Park!
Nowadays it's easier to find film crews shooting
in Vancouver, high in the mountains of Tibet, in some
hot, remote Pacific
island than in the streets of Hollywood. It all
has to do with globalization, combined with the
eternal search for new locations and lower
prices. Film crews are just as good in New York,
as they are in Miami, in Paris, in countries
like Colombia, where there's a booming film
industry and a lot of fresh talent willing to
make films for the world market without the high
costs, union restrictions and straight-jacket
mentalities. Things have definitely changed...
Even though not many large-scale films have been
shot in Colombia, due to the short-sightedness
of many producers and bad press which only
lingers on certain details of the drug traffic
and the guerrillas, which only affect a small
portion of the country and have absolutely no
incidence on the daily lives of the majority of
the population.
Due
to a new film law passed in 2003,
the film industry in Colombia has experienced an
incredible "boom" in production and Colombian
films have been the top grossing pictures in the
country in 2005, 2006 and the first semester of
2008, easily beating out the top Hollywood films
at the B.O. At the moment there are more than
100 local features in different stages of
development from pre-production to marketing for
theatrical release. In 2009 Cinecolor, the
successful Argentinian film lab with branches in
Chile, Brazil and Mexico, will open its full-service
35mm film lab with complete digital transfer and
post-production services. There are now three
large film rental companies with a ful gamut of
35mm, 16mm, high scale HD cameras, and HMI and
tungsten lighting fixtures for every taste and
desire. And, of course, this is rounded out with
excellent collateral fringes in the way of
transportation, catering, wardrobe designers,
excellent prop masters, special effects, make-up
artists, all types of caucasian and ethnic
actors, excellent technical crews, casting
directors, assistants, etc.
